Establishment of the academic course in archaeology at Tbilisi State University is connected with the name of prominent Georgian scientist and public figure, Ekvtime Takaishvili. On May 21, 1918, with the proposal of Ivane Javakhishvili, the Board of Professors granted Ekvtime Takaishvili the title of Doctor of Archeology, ‘’honoris causa’’, for his huge contribution to the field of archeology.
The academic course in archeology at Tbilisi State University has trained numerous scientists and archaeologists. In 1967, the cabinet of archeology was established at the University under the guidance of Professor Otar Japaridze, which afterwards formed the basis for the establishment of rich Archeology Foundation of the University Museum. The collection of archaeological materials presented at the museum covers the period from the Stone Age to late mid centuries. These exhibits were found in different parts of Georgia and their discovery and research have an immense importance not only for Georgia, but also for the archeology of Western Asia.
