International Conference “European Values and Identity: Multiple Dimensions of Europeanization”

The 2nd international conference “European Values and Identity: Multiple Dimensions of Europeanization” was opened at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on October 25. The two-day conference is dedicated to European values, political, economic and social aspects of European integration, European education.
Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze; French Ambassador to Georgia, Pascal Meunier, Georgian and foreign experts attended the event.

Rector Sharvashidze wished the participants of the conference successful and fruitful work: “An important conference has been opened, where we will talk about European identity, our perspectives and existing dimensions. A lot of guests have arrived from France, Great Britain and the United States. The conference is quite representative. It will cover a number of issues related to identity, Europeanization, where Georgia stands today, how European it is and so on. Our researchers will answer these questions. But today we agreed that Georgia is Europe, our path is European and we will never turn away from this path.”

“Georgia is very close to Europe. We hope that by Christmas Georgian citizens will have an opportunity to travel to EU member states without visas. In addition, we want to bring French quality to Georgian universities, in particular into the fields of research and education. The Tbilisi State University is hosting a very important conference especially as Europe faces a number of crises, involving Brexit, migrant problems. Similar conference is a good opportunity for developing public opinion, new vision,” French Ambassador to Georgia, Pascal Meunier said.

12 sections will work at the conference. The participants will discuss political aspects of Europeanization, conflicts, integration, EU’s eastern enlargement, transformation of European values, economic crisis, social and economic models, common market, open borders, migration, European values and European education area, Bologna process and Europeanization of higher education.

President of the Georgian Community of France, Otar Zourabichvili awarded the Pegasus Prize to the authors of the best project, which won the student competition announced in frames of the event. Among them were TSU students Gocha Lobzhanidze, Nino Gozalishvili, Giorgi Khidesheli and Guga Berdzenishvili.   

The multidisciplinary conference has been organized by TSU, Center for Social Sciences and Georgian Community of France; it is being held with the financial support of Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation, Academic Swiss Caucasus Net and Georgia Proeuropa.
