Yerevan State Medical University is the leading provider of higher education provision for the medical and health care professions in Armenia. According to the decree of the Armenian Parliament a medical school was opened on the 9th of November 1920. The academic curricula and programs were corresponding to those of higher educational institutions. The memorable inaugural ceremony of the university opening was held on January 31 of 1920. This resulted in putting the organization of health care on ground basis as well as fostering the development of medical sciences in Armenia fending for the nation could have highly qualified medical service.

The University is in the process of transition from the former soviet HE system to a European 3 stage system. Within the area of public health undergraduate programs include studies in:

• Basics of medical aspects of demography;
• Main medical social issues in public health;
• Health economics;
• Health care systems;
• Quality assurance in health care.

University staff supporting the project by providing detailed characteristics of current social and health context, as well as state needs.
