Academic Conference Dedicated to Iakob Gogebashvili and Prize in Kartvelian Studies

On October 28, Professor Emeritus of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Zurab Chumburidze was awarded the Iakob Gogebashvili Scientific Prize for his important scientific paper in Kartvelian Studies “Georgian Language, Writing System, Manuscripts.” “I am very glad and I would like to thank you all for appreciating my work, especially for awarding the Iakob Gogebashvili Prize. The book was published recently and it is a great honor for me,” Zviad Chumburidze said. The Prize was handed over to him during the academic conference dedicated to Georgian educator and children’s writer, Iakob Gogebashvili. Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze, students, professors, representatives of Georgian academic community attended the event.

“The Gogebashvili Prize is awarded to scientists for their special contribution to popularization of the Georgian language through their scientific works. This year, the Prize has been awarded to Professor Zurab Chumburidze for his multiyear and fruitful work over the book, which covers the issues related to the Georgian language,” Rector George Sharvashidze said.

Dean of the TSU Faculty of Humanities, Nana Gaprindashvili said that “a very honorary prize named after Iakob Gogebashvili was introduced at TSU in 2015. Moreover, the University is holding a very important academic event with the participation of a lot of Georgian scientists. Along with this conference, we will also hold a very important student conference this year.”

TSU awards the Iakob Gogebashvili Prize in Kartvelian Studies biannually in late October (Iakob Gogebashvili was born on October 27). The Prize is awarded to a citizen of Georgia for an important scientific paper in the field of Kartvelian studies. The purpose of the scientific prize is to further develop Kartvelological fields. The Gogebashvili Prize has been awarded for the third time already.

Along with the events dedicated to Iakob Gogebashvili, the first student academic conference is also being held with the participation of students from various TSU faculties (humanities, psychology and education, social-political sciences), who mainly presented thematic papers about Iakob Gogebashvili’s life and work. Schoolchildren from public school of Nigvziani, a village in the Lanchkhuti Municipality, are also participating in the conference. An event “Reading ‘Mother Language’ by Iakob Gogebashvili” was held on the sideline of the conference. By the end of the conference, certificates will be awarded to all participants.

Scientific papers presented at the academic conference will promote the development of Kartvelological fields.
