German Professor Donates Prize Money to Support Development of Kartvelian Studies

The first winner of the Ivane Javakhishvili International Scientific Prize, famous Kartvelologist and linguist, Prof. Dr. Heinz Fähnrich from the University of Jena donated GEL 20 000 awarded to him to the International Association for Kartvelian Studies.

Professor Heinz Fähnrich sent a letter to TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava in which he notified the Rector about his intention to donate his prize money to support the development of Kartvelian studies. The letter reads: “Let me express my gratitude for the Ivane Javakhishvili International Scientific Prize awarded to me by your university and many thanks to your staff. Mr. Papava, I want to ask you to do me a favor and use the prize money for the development of Kartvelian studies in Tbilisi. There is the International Association for Kartvelian Studies in Georgia. Please, use this money for further development of Kartvelian studies. This is one of my dreams. Do me a favor and fulfill my request. I hope that you will understand me. Thank you in advance for assistance.”

On initiative of TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava, on December 26, 2013 the Tbilisi State University announced a call for Ivane Javakhishvili International Scientific Prize for scientific papers of international significance created in Kartvelian studies. The prize for special contribution to Kartvelian studies is awarded biennially.

By the decision of the TSU Prize Committee, the Ivane Javakhishvili International Scientific Prize 2014 was awarded to Heinz Fähnrich for his special contribution to Kartvelian studies. The winner received the diploma of the Ivane Javakhishvili International Scientific Prize, the Ivane Javakhishvili Medal and GEL 20 000.
