Davit Chkhikvishvili was born in the village of Guturi (Chokhatauri district) on February 23, 1921. In 1939, he finished the Batumi public school and continued his studies at the Moscow Institute of Energy.
During the World War II Davit Chkhikvishvili was actively involved in the hostilities as a pilot. After the war, he continued his studies at the Alexander Pushkin Tbilisi Pedagogical Institute and the Party School under the Central Committee of the Georgian Communist Party. Afterwards, D. Chkhikvishvili started to work at the Georgian Society for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries. Later on, he served as an Assistant to the President of the Georgian Academy of Sciences and Scientific Secretary at the Department of Social Sciences. In 1952, D. Chkhikvishvili defended a thesis for the candidate of sciences degree. At the same time, he was working as a senior teacher at the Tbilisi State University and the Tbilisi Pedagogical Institute.
In 1957-1961, D. Chkhikvishvili served as the Minister of Culture of Georgian SSR; in 1961-1969 - the Rector of the Alexander Pushkin Tbilisi Pedagogical Institute and in 1969-1972 - the Head of the Department of Culture of the Central Committee of the Georgian Communist Party. From1972 to 1980, D. Chkhikvishvili served as the Rector of the Tbilisi State University and simultaneously – as a senior research fellow at the I. Javakhishvili State Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography of the Georgian Academy of Sciences. In 1981-1987, he held the post of the Minister of Higher and Secondary Special Education of Georgia.
In 1964, Davit Chkhikvishvili defended doctoral dissertation and in 1965 he was awarded the title of a professor. In 1970, he was elected a corresponding member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences. D. Chkhikvishvili was an honored scientist, senior editor and member of the editorial board of the 12-volume works by I. Javakhishvili.
D. Chkhikvishvili is the author of more than 100 scientific works, among them are the monographs: ‘National Forms of Socialist Culture’, ‘Socialism and Several Issues of National Culture’, ‘Socialism, Nation and Culture’, ‘Sumbatashvili-Yuzhin Pioneers of Soviet Theatre’, ‘People and Culture’, etc.
Davit Chkhikvishvili died in December 1987.
