Practical Anthropology - Presentation
A presentation of the first Georgian-language textbook in physical anthropology “Practical Anthropology” was held at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University on November 26. TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava, students and professors attended the event.
TSU Rector, Vladimer Papava said that “it is a priority issue for the university to publish textbooks, because textbooks are needed for our students to get education. This new textbook in anthropology is the first Georgian-language textbook, which is quite interesting. I think that at this stage it will be very helpful for students and later this textbook will be improved based on the accumulated experience.”
“It is our desire to have textbooks, monographic books in Georgia in order to establish and perceive what we have gained in this field and transfer it to future generations. The book is based on those factual materials, which are kept at the Anthropological Research Laboratory of the Institute of History and Ethnology. Moreover, it involves methodic works, which have been agreed among the world scientists. The textbook is designed for the specialists in Caucasus studies as well as for MA, PhD students and researchers interested in anthropology. I think, it will become a desk book for archaeologists too,” Liana Bitadze, the author of the book, head of the Anthropological Research Laboratory of the Institute of History and Ethnology, said.
Practical Anthropology is the first textbook of this field not only in Georgia, but throughout the post-Soviet space. It provides the results of universally recognized research in modern physical (biological) anthropology. The textbook takes into account the data of modern research conducted by foreign authors as well as Georgian school of anthropology. The textbook was published on the basis of the Institute of Caucasiology of the TSU Faculty of Humanities.
The textbook “Practical Anthropology” has been created by a group of authors (L. Bitadze; O. Tsetskhladze; Sh. Laliashvili; M. Chkadua; E. Kakabadze) and it is not simply a textbook for students, but it is an important work in terms of studying physical anthropology of Caucasus peoples.
