Evening in Memory of Konstantine Tsereteli at TSU
On February 4 the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University hosted an evening in memory of Academician Konstantine Tsereteli, founder of the Hebrew-Aramaic Department at TSU. TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava, representatives of Georgian society and academic circles, Konstantine Tsereteli’s friends and relatives attended the event.
TSU Rector Vladimir Papava said while addressing the audience: “Konstantine Tsereteli is a person, who created an entire epoch in Georgian science. The Georgian School of Oriental Studies has always been strong. International level achievements in semitology are associated with Kote Tsereteli’s name. Today the Tbilisi State University shows its respect for the activities of one of its remarkable representatives.”
“Today we have a remarkable evening at the university; this evening is especially important for us – Georgian Jews, for those, who stay in Georgia and those who left for Israel. The fact that we, the Georgian Jews, have maintained our spirituality is just owing to Kote Tsereteli. He made an indelible contribution to the foundation and development of the Hebrew studies as a science in Georgia,” Doctor of Historical Sciences Zaira Davarashvili, head of the Club 26 Centuries and teacher of the Hebrew language said.
During the event Konstantine Tsereteli’s friends, colleagues and acquaintances made their speeches; a documentary created by TSU studio “Mematiane” titled “With Job’s Faith and Patience” was also presented.
2014 has been declared a year marking the settlement of the Jews in Georgia and their 26-century-old cohabitation. The evening in memory of Konstantine Tsereteli was organized by the Institute of Oriental Studies at the TSU Faculty of Humanities.
