Memorandum of Cooperation between TSU, Sokhumi University, National Center of Manuscripts and Academy of Arts
Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University has laid the foundation for the creation of a Georgian script lab. On
November 11, TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava, Rector of the Sokhumi State University Joni Apakidze, Director of the National Center of Manuscripts Buba Kudava and Rector of Apolon Kutateladze State Academy of Arts Tinatin Kldiashvili signed a memorandum on establishing the cooperation in the spheres of science, art and education, as well as in studying, researching and protecting of material and non-material cultural heritage.
The key subject of the agreement is creation of a Georgian script lab. To implement this national project, the signatories pledge to unite their efforts to effectively complete the work within reasonable timeframes that will promote the propaganda of Georgian script, as a sign of national identity. TSU Rector Vladimer Papava said: “Creation of the Georgian script lab is extremely important. Today, in the era of computer technology, we are not so rich in this sphere and who else but us can do the work over improvement of Georgian script. The signed memorandum is kind of obligation among the institutions. It lays the foundation for revitalizing this lab by joint efforts in order to create modern products using new technologies. TSU will spare no efforts to make this project successful.”
“The memorandum was signed among the educational-scientific research institutions and this is very important, because by our joint efforts we should lay the foundation for a national undertaking,” Rector of the Georgian Academy of Arts, Tinatin Kldiashvili said.
“Georgian alphabet has passed a great road of development. Sometimes we think that this process was ongoing in itself. However, there were some people, who were creating certain standards and patterns. The Georgian script lab is the facility that will continue the same work done by ancient specialists. It will create certain standards and develop certain patterns. I hope that it will be the lab that will meet modern challenges,” Director of the Georgian National Institute of Manuscripts, Buba Kudava said.
Rector of Sokhumi State University, Joni Apakidze also spoke about the signed memorandum. According to him, “an extremely important memorandum has been signed among four institutions. This, first of all, means the cooperation in various spheres. Creation of the Georgian script lab is a national task of huge importance. It will undertake educational, as well as cultural and other scientific functions. We have enough competence to fulfill this task. This is the issue of special state concern and it will definitely find its place in the Georgian state. We will do our utmost for the implementation of this most important national project.”
The key goal of the newly established lab is to create a diversity of Georgian computer scripts through which it will be possible to equip computer operating system, to diversify schoolchildren’s aesthetic environment, to support the government’s electronic program, to train new generation of creators of computer scripts and to obtain relevant copyrights; as well as to render legal aid in this affair; to organize permanent exhibitions of new and traditional scripts; to hold presentations, contests and other events.
