Youth Energy Conference was held at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on June 28. The conference was organized by USAID’s Governing for Growth (G4G) in Georgia project and TSU. Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze; Deputy Energy Minister, Giorgi Chikovani; Director of Economic Growth at USAID, Veronica Lee, students and invited guests attended the event.

“A very important conference is being held for students. It is a gathering of young power engineers, where the issues and opportunities of career development offered by this sector, as well as innovations available in the sector are discussed. A lot of students are interested in this sector. We are interested in renewable energy, modern approaches and innovations developing in the sector. We suppose that the University has to play its role in a technological breakthrough that is possible in this direction,” Rector Sharvashidze said.

During the conference, government officials, representatives of energy organizations and academic circles acquainted students with energy innovations and interesting technologies, as well curricula and career development opportunities.

Deputy Energy Minister, Giorgi Chikovani said that more student involvement is necessary to develop energy sector.

“This conference aims at opening new opportunities in Georgia’s energy sector to youth. The sector is developing very quickly, we have challenges and it is very important to ensure the future generation’s active involvement so that they knew the new trends in renewable, clean energy, energy markets and new technologies,” he said.

Students had an opportunity to meet with various energy market participants (among them Georgian State Electrosystem, Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation, power distribution, generation and consumer companies) and get information about job opportunities in the sector.

She said that since the 1990s, USAID invested hundreds of millions in Georgia, including in its energy sector. “It is important for the development of energy sector and the future of the country,” she added, stressing the importance of involvement of more educated and active young people in the sector.
