Georgians in World War II (Second Wave of Immigration)

An exhibition ‘Georgians in World War II (Second Wave of Immigration) was held at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University to mark the Day of Georgian Immigrants. The exhibition was dedicated to Georgian compatriots, who were captured during WWII and who stayed in immigration. The exhibition displayed immigrants’ photos and manuscripts, wartime Georgian immigrant publications (newspaper ‘Georgia’, magazine ‘Georgian Nation’).

“Today we celebrate the Day of Georgian Immigrants. We established this day last year. I hope that exhibitions and scientific conferences marking this day will be held in future too. These people spent their lives fighting for freedom of Georgia. We want to appreciate their contribution, sacrifice, struggle for freedom of Georgia and we tried to show our respect towards them through exhibiting their photos, manuscripts and various items,” Director of the TSU Immigration Museum, Rusudan Kobakhidze said.

“Each day dedicated to Georgian immigrants and Diaspora is extremely important. It is important in terms of showing our attention towards our compatriots. They should not be isolated, because immigrants represent an important part of our society,” Georgian State Minister for Diaspora Issues, Kote Surguladze said.

The Day of Georgian Immigrants was established on June 25, 2013. Each year, on June 25, the Georgian Orthodox Church holds public service for deceased Georgian immigrants, while the university will host thematic exhibitions and scientific conferences on this day.
