Seminar on Conflict Prevention and Resolution at TSU

The Institute for Conflict Analysis and Management at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University held a seminar on conflict prevention and resolution issues for the students of the Giorgi Antsukhelidze NCO Center at the Georgian Defense Ministry. TSU Professors from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Nodar Belkania and Guguli Magradze delivered a lecture to the militaries. Conflict emergence mechanisms, factors promoting conflict escalation and de-escalation, various methods of conflict prevention and transformation were the key issues discussed during the seminar.

TSU Professor, MP Guguli Magradze said that “similar seminars enable Georgian militaries to better realize those situations, in which they may appear both inside and outside the country; to be aware about the causes of conflict; how to evade conflict escalation and promote conflict de-escalation. We discuss those factors, which stir up or defuse conflicts. This is very useful for us too in order to enrich our theoretical knowledge through analyzing particular practical cases. At the same time, very close business-like relations will be established between MA students and NCO students; they will hold joint discussions, meetings on various important issues.”

“Besides that education and practical experience, which our sergeants acquire in the course of their military service, they should also have theoretical knowledge – relations with the university, various educational institutions. These people have gained experience in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo and it is very interesting how their practical knowledge is linked with the issues studied by the university students theoretically. Thus, I think that similar seminars will be extremely important for the both sides,” Commander of the Giorgi Antsukhelidze NCO Center, Major Lasha Davitadze said.

By the end of the seminar, a discussion was held with the participation of MA students and army sergeants.

45 students of the NCO Center participated in the seminar. Mutual cooperation with the Defense Ministry will further continue and seminars will also be held for other structures of the Defense Ministry.
