TSU to Set up Group Working on Strategic Development Plan

A hot election cycle has been over at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and now the university has the legally elected expanded Academic Council and Representative Council (Senate), Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze said at a briefing, where he presented new Chancellor of TSU, Prof. Nunu Ovsianikova. The Rector focused on the new action plan and noted that “the university starts working on a new strategic plan.”

“All stakeholders will be able to join the process. The document will be open. It will represent a vision about how we want to develop the university,” Rector Sharvashidze said.

He also said that a working group will be set up and representatives of academic circles and students will have an opportunity to join it. The first meeting of the working group will be held in the near future.

The Rector congratulated TSU alumni of all generations on the university’s success on international arena. TSU has become the first university, which appeared in Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Commenting on this issue, Sharvashidze said: “It is a good start, but although we are the leaders in the region, it is not enough. It is essential to merge research and education; to improve student life that, first of all, requires providing the right skills needed to meet labor market requirements. It is also crucial to internationalize the university, to establish more links and cooperation with foreign scientific centers, successful universities.”

On September 23, the Academic Council of TSU elected Giorgi Sharvashidze as new Rector of the Tbilisi State University. On October 30, the Representative Council (Senate) of TSU approved Nunu Ovsianikova, who was nominated by the Academic Council, as new Chancellor of TSU.

Pursuant to the amendments to the Law of Georgia on Higher Education, all governing bodies of the university have been elected. Number of members of the governing bodies has increased – the Academic Council is now composed of 36 members and the Senate – of 72 members.
