Prof. Jean-Philippe Platteau Delivers Public Lecture at TSU

On October 17, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University hosted a public lecture “Is the Muslim World Entrapped in a Civilizational Crisis?” by Jean-Philippe Platteau, Professor of Economics at the University of Namur (Belgium). TSU professors and students attended the lecture.

Prof. Jean-Philippe Platteau said that the relationship between politics and religion and the role of Islam in this relationship was discussed during the lecture. “The purpose of the lecture is to understand the main problems in Muslim countries, the causes of these problems and where these problems are coming from – religion or politics. I claim that the majority of problems are coming from politics rather than religion,” he said.

TSU student, Erekle Gozalishvili said that the topic of the lecture was extremely interesting considering the current political situation. “The political developments ongoing in the world are related to religion; various religions and especially Islam play a huge role in the establishment of policy courses in many countries; thus, the today’s lecture was very useful for students,” he noted.
