Shalva Nutsubidze’s 125th Anniversary Celebration at TSU
The Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University hosted solemn events dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Academician Shalva Nutsubidze, one of the founders of TSU and prominent Georgian philosopher.
TSU students and academic staff laid a wreath at Shalva Nutsubidze’s grave at the University Pantheon. Shalva Nutsubidze’s successors handed over a part of the scientist’s private library to the TSU Library – that very library, which was led by Shalva Nutsubidze in 1931-1935.
First Deputy Rector Levan Aleksidze said: “TSU is celebrating the anniversary of a great scientist, orator and teacher, great scientist and great person, Professor Shalva Nutsubidze. After familiarizing yourselves with his biography, you will learn how much he had suffered. He entered the world history as one of the best philosophers. Young people should learn much from Shalva Nutsubidze.”
Shalva Nutsubidze’s daughter, Tamar Nutsubidze expressed huge gratitude toward TSU for such respect. She said: “It is important that an international conference will be held on the sideline of the anniversary with the participation of the world famous scientists.”
Tbilisi Vice Mayor Sevdia Ugrekhelidze said: “Shalva Nutsubidze is a treasure for the Georgian nation and we should always take care and remember about this treasure. Even during the Soviet period he managed and achieved recognition for his scientific works. It is important that we do not forget about such people and respect them.”
In frames of the event, an exhibition dedicated to Shalva Nutsubidze was opened at the TSU Museum’s exhibition hall. The exposition displayed Shalva Nutsubidze’s personal belongings, including a Bible presented by Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Kalistrate Tsintsadze with inscription; silver vessel and candlestick presented by Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ephraim II; a spoon and a candlestick used by Shalva Nutsubidze in exile; The Knight in the Panther’s Skin translated by Nutsubidze into Russian and corrected by Stalin; Nutsubidze’s translation of the Knight in the Panther’s Skin with the author’s inscription; manuscripts, letters, books and other items. The exhibition lasted for a week.
At the end of the event a solemn session and a conference were opened, where Georgian and foreign scientists, as well as invited guests made their welcome speeches.
