“Fate of the Poles in the Caucasus”
On June 18, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) hosted a presentation of the translated book “Fate of the Poles in the Caucasus” by TSU Prof. Maria Filina and Danuta Ossowska. The book was translated in Georgian by Salome Bedukadze and it describes the life of the Poles, including Polish poets from the Group of Caucasian Poets, exiled for their political views to the Caucasus, particularly to Georgia in the 19th – 20th centuries.
Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze, Polish Ambassador to Georgia, Mariusz Maszkiewicz, TSU professors and students attended the presentation.
“We are holding the presentation of a very important publication. It provides an interesting overview of the life of the Poles in Georgia, the relations established between the Georgians and the Poles over the years,” Rector Sharvashidze said.
The materials included in the book cover the period of 1830s-1850s.
Polish Ambassador to Georgia, Mariusz Maszkiewicz said that “a lot of Polish people, including poets and writers lived in Georgia in the 19th century. They left an important trace in Georgia’s creative life. I would like to note that through their works, the Poles tried to come closer to Georgian history.”
The monograph has been published twice in the Polish language; in 2015 it was released in Russian. The project has been financed by the Polish foundation Aid to Poles in the East.
The event has been organized by the Center for Polish Studies at TSU, the Embassy of Poland to Georgia and the Cultural-Educational Society of Polish People in Georgia Polonia.
