New Developments at TSU

The first stage of work on strategic development plan has been completed at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) and the draft plan for 2017-2021 has been prepared after three weeks of intensive work. A working group that involves all the stakeholders still continues its activities. The first meeting of the working group was held on October 8. The final document of the strategic development plan will be ready by the end of 2016.
Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze said at a news briefing on November 1 that the initial version of strategic development plan is already ready and it will become public after being uploaded to the university’s website. It will enable the TSU alumni of all generations to make their contributions to the university’s development and establishment of its vision. Rector Sharvashidze also said: “It will be the first case when we will openly create the future, which we all want to have. The goal is absolutely clear – TSU will become a European-level research institution, leading university in the region by many indicators. We plan to introduce European management system in the university, the so called EFQM model, which is an acceptable and exemplary system for higher educational institutions.”
On November 1, Rector Giorgi Sharvashidze named Professor Mikheil Chkhenkeli as his new deputy, who will also get involved in the development of the university’s strategic development plan. The new Deputy Rector said that the key issues that are reflected in the university’s strategic development plan involve the integration of research institutions into the learning process. It will help improve the quality of education, on the one hand, and will be beneficial to research activities, on the other. Prof. Chkhenkeli also said that “it is planned to invite foreign experts and professors to the university, to use our Georgian intellectual potential as much as possible. It will be one of the university’s priorities to ensure that the quality of education at TSU meets global standards.”
Mikheil Chkhenkeli graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at TSU with excellence, where he was awarded Academician Muskhelishvili Scholarship. He received his doctorate in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania. He has taught at leading U.S. universities for about 20 years and received a lot of awards for his scientific and pedagogical activities, including the Faculty Oscar for best teaching, nine best teacher awards from the University of Pennsylvania, Goldman Sachs Foundation Prize, research grants and scholarships. He is the author of a lot of scientific papers, reviewer of various books published in the United States and member of scientific research societies. Mikheil Chkhenkeli has close contacts with professors from leading American higher educational institutions, including the Universities of Harvard, Preston, Pennsylvania, Yale, Columbia, Brown, Cornell, Chicago, Berkley, New York, Johns Hopkins and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mikheil Chkhenkeli is a member of the American Association of University Professors; member of the Authorization Council for Higher Educational Institutions, as well as member of the Board of Founders of the American University.
