Geography Week at TSU
Geography Week has been opened at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University dedicated to the 55th anniversary of the TSU Museum of Geography. An exhibition of the TSU Museum of Geography was also opened in frames of Geography Week, where a rich collection stored in the museum fund has been exhibited.
TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava said that “the exposition contains exhibits, which are extremely interesting not only for scientific circles, but also for general public. It should be noted that new exhibits have also been displayed along with old ones. One of the exhibits has been discovered by Nika Tsitelashvili, second-year student of biological direction – this is a 10-13-million-year-old whale vertebras discovered in Imereti a year ago. As known, by decision of the Georgian Government, studies in 17 specializations will fully be covered by the state. Unfortunately, geography and geology do not belong to this category. Recently I sent a letter to the Minister of Education and Science about financing these two directions. The both directions have a crucial importance for the country proceeding from our national interests.”
The exposition contains very important exhibits, such as a world atlas belonging to Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani with his and his brother’s inscriptions on it; relief map of the Caucasus bought by Alexander Javakhishvili in 1920; Dimitri Ermakov’s photo collection (originals and tapes); a fragment of a stalagmite from the New Athos cave, etc.
Geography Week will host a photo contest by schoolchildren and students, conference of schoolchildren, geography quiz with the participation of students from the TSU Geography Department and schoolchildren as well as other events.
Geography Week has been organized by the Department of Geography of the TSU Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences and it will end on December 7.
