Concert by Oxford’s Jesus College Choir at TSU

Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) hosted a concert by the Jesus College Choir (the University of Oxford) on June 30. The choir consists of successful representatives of Oxford’s academic community.  

The choir performed various compositions by Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Anton Bruckner, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Thomas Tallis, Orlando Gibbons, John Bennett and others.

The Reverend Dr Megan Daffern said that the choir tours various countries each year, adding that a famous archaeologist, Michael Vickers offered them to travel to Georgia.  

Michael Vickers, Professor Emeritus of Archaeology at the University of Oxford, is one of the organizers of the concert. He has a long scientific cooperation with the TSU Department of Archaeology.

Over the past eight years the Jesus College Chapel Choir has toured various countries of the world, singing out their hearts in a number of churches and basilicas, including the Basilica di Santa Croce in Florence and St. Martin’s Cathedral in Bratislava. In addition, the choir has also performed in Krakow, Lisbon, Cologne, Bonn, Vienna, Sienna, Hong Kong, Shanghai, etc. Each Sunday the choir performs in the historical Chapel of the Jesus College.

It should be noted that the choir is specialized in performing the Welsh music. Jesus College was founded in 1571 under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. As part of its Georgian tour, the choir held concerts in Batumi and Kutaisi, and completed its tour with a concert at the Tbilisi State University.
