Increasing Women’s Involvement in STEM Disciplines

The Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University hosted a presentation by Beth Mitchneck, the U.S. National Science Foundation’s (NSF) ADVANCE program director, on a topic: How to Increase Women’s Involvement in Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Disciplines.

The key goal of the event was to increase the participation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering careers. In his report, Prof. Mitchneck focused on the activities carried out by the U.S. Government to encourage women’s involvement. Deputy Rector of TSU, Marine Chitashvili said that “it is necessary to promote women’s participation in engineering careers at an institutional level. The American side offers to involve our women in an international academic network. An idea has emerged at TSU to set up an association that will unite all the women working at various higher educational institutions and try to find solutions to existing problems.”

The presentation was followed by a dialogue between the speaker and the audience. TSU academic and administrative staff attended the meeting.
The event was held in Tbilisi with the support of the U.S. Embassy to Georgia.
