Public Discussion of Draft Social and Economic Development Strategy at TSU
The Government of Georgia has started a public discussion of the draft social and economic development strategy of the country. The first public discussion of the draft strategy was held at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University on September 13. The organizers of the event – Tbilisi State University and the Ministries of Finance and Economy of Georgia symbolically arranged the event on the Day of Economist.
The public discussion was opened by TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava. Georgian Finance Minister Nodar Khaduri made a presentation. Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Davit Narmania also spoke about the draft strategy.
TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava said: “ The fact that the government has come to the Tbilisi State University to discuss the strategy demonstrates the attitude of the executive authorities towards our academic sphere and our professors. Naturally, our native university is the venue to discuss a serious governmental document. Of course, the draft social and economic development strategy is an important document, as it should work with both the Georgian society and international organizations. Everyone should have a clear idea of what particular goals the Georgian government plans to implement in the near future, how the Georgian economy should develop further.”
“We start discussing of the draft social and economic development strategy of the country in order to finalize it. The key message of the strategy is that business environment should be acceptable for business in the country, its ownership should be protected, human capital should further develop and education system should undergo further reforms. Georgian economy should become competitive, because only then it will be possible to settle all those problems, which our country is facing today,” Georgian Finance Minister Nodar Khaduri said.
Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Davit Narmania focused on the key aspects of the strategy. He said: “The economic development strategy covers the period until 2020 and focuses on several key directions, such as development of the country’s economy; creation of a sense of stability for the investors; ensuring real and tangible economic growth and public welfare. It concerns not only the key incentives for economic growth and development, but also social issues, which have been so pressing in our country over the past years”.
Government members, representatives of the National Bank, international donor organizations, business associations as well as independent experts participated in the discussion. The draft social and economic development strategy was developed with active participation of the ministries, experts, business sector and international community. The country’s development strategy will be finalized after all remarks and recommendations made during public discussions are taken into consideration.
