Multimedia Center Opens at TSU
A multimedia center has been opened at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University for journalism students. TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava, U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Richard Norland, Deputy Education Minister Ketevan Natriashvili, students and academic staff attended the opening ceremony.
TSU Rector Vladimer Papava said that “the center has been equipped with modern technologies and represents a joint product by TSU and the U.S. Embassy. Without their huge efforts, it would have been impossible to create the center. This center is vital for our students to acquire comprehensive education at our university and to become successful journalists for our media space.”
Ambassador Norland noted, according to the U.S. Embassy to Georgia, that “this program aims to help journalism students learn modern media production standards using multiple platforms.” He also said that professional and free media is crucial for the country’s development. By financing the multimedia center, he continued, the U.S. Embassy tried to help journalism students raise their skills. Ambassador Norland noted that the key goal was to ensure that TSU students had a center, where they would be able to produce technologically high quality product, whereas this product would largely contribute to the development of public discussion. By supporting the opening of this media center, the U.S. Embassy has made a certain contribution to enhancing education for journalism students, Norland added.
Deputy Education Minister Ketevan Natriashvili spoke about the importance of the event. “The center will promote the development of students’ skills and their further employment. The Ministry of Education and Science will support the implementation of similar initiatives in future too.”
The work over opening the multimedia center was launched last year. Along with infrastructural development, Journalism Direction of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences resumed its educational programs; introduction of innovatory learning methods is underway. The guests got acquainted with the center’s working principles. Students took their first interview with Ambassador Norland at the newly opened media center.
After the opening ceremony, Ambassador Norland visited TSU Institute of American Studies. Later he addressed the general student body at Tbilisi State University.
Speaking to an audience of more than 400 students, the Ambassador spoke about the successful cooperation and exchange programs between the U.S. Government and TSU. He said that TSU was always distinguished by educational standards.
TSU, Georgia’s oldest state university, received praise from the Ambassador as “a vital landmark and a tribute to Georgia’s deep commitment to education,” according to the U.S. Embassy to Georgia.
Ambassador Norland also spoke about recent political developments in the country and reiterated that the United States would remain Georgia’s steady partner, promote stable environment and development of democratic institutions in the country.
By the end of the meeting Ambassador Norland answered the questions from students. TSU Rector Vladimer Papava awarded the Ambassador with TSU medal and presented his book published in the United States “Economic Reforms in Post-Communist Georgia: Twenty Years After.”
