20th International Annual Conference on American Studies

The 20th International Annual Conference on American Studies was opened at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on May 23 to mark the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. The event organized by the TSU Institute of American Studies and the Association of American Studies of Georgia was dedicated to Georgian-American relations. Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze, Deputy Rector Nino Okribelashvili, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Jeffrey K. Reneau, Head of the TSU Institute of American Studies, Vasil Kacharava, professors and students attended the event.

“Moon landing by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin was one of the most serious steps ahead in the development of civilization. A lot of research papers and reports will be presented at the today’s conference in the context of Georgian-American relations, examples of American democracy,” Rector George Sharvashidze said, stressing the importance of youth participation in the conference.

The U.S. Embassy to Georgia is a partner of the 20th International Annual Conference on American Studies. Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Jeffrey K. Reneau said that the conference will help Georgians better familiarize themselves with the United States.

Vasil Kacharava, head of the TSU Institute of American Studies, noted that about 140 papers will be presented during the conference. “It is a very important, anniversary conference. Of course, attention will be focused on our scientific activities – what we have published and what we plan to do in the future. We will brief the audience on our activities. We have very interesting messages,” Kacharava said.

The 20th International Annual Conference on American Studies will end on May 25.
