TSU Hosts Students from Leading U.S. Universities
Students from Harvard and Tufts Universities, as well as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology visited Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on May 29 as part of Eurasia Leadership Trek. Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze and Georgian students participated in the meeting. The goal of the five-day visit of students from the U.S. universities is to study the issues of regional security, NATO and EU integration as well as economic development in the Black Sea countries. Students from the world’s leading universities visited the occupation line, met with government officials, representatives of NGO and business sectors.
Zviad Adzinbaia, a MA student of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, said that it was symbolic that the visit coincided with the 100th anniversary of the First Democratic Republic and Tbilisi State University. “It was one of the best events held in Georgia. We held meetings with government members, private sector and other interesting people. We visited the occupation line. The American students want to study Georgia in many aspects – from security to investment environment and culture. I think that their stay in Georgia, talking to students and listening to their opinions will be especially interesting for them,” Zviad Adzinbaia said and expressed hope that cooperation and friendship with TSU will continue in the future.
Rector Giorgi Sharvashidze noted that “the meeting with students was very interesting. Good questions were asked, including sharp ones.” He also said that the delegation members are traveling to various countries and sharing their experience with peers.
The tour of MA students from Harvard Kennedy, Business and Law Schools, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, as well as Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is being carried out under the patronage of the Center for Asia Leadership. The topic of the project is “Understanding Geopolitical Dimensions and Regional Outlook.”
By the end of the meeting TSU Gordela, which recently held a concert at Harvard University, performed some musical compositions for the guests.
The project representatives organize conferences and workshops in Eastern Europe and will prepare publications on the basis of received experience. It should be noted that the 2018 Trek is focused on the Eastern European Region; so, from May 24 to June 14, students will visit Tbilisi (Georgia), Baku (Azerbaijan), Ankara and Istanbul (Turkey), Kiev (Ukraine) and Chisinau (Moldova) to study this region, The participants of the tour will study political, economic and social problems with the help of various organizations and their managers. They will try to study the region and discuss the issues of democratic reforms, regional security, NATO and EU integration, economic development in the Black Sea countries.
