Evening in Memory of Jemal Ajiashvili at TSU
The Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) hosted an event dedicated to the first death anniversary of a famous writer and translator, Jemal Ajiashvili. TSU academic staff and representatives of civil society attended the event.
Jamlet Khukhashvili, co-chairman of the 26-Century Old Jewish-Georgian Friendship Jubilee Organizational Commission, said: “TSU hosted an evening in memory of the person, whom both Georgians and Jewish are proud of. Jemal Ajiashvili was the most talented, modest, decent person; he was simply a good man.”
”TSU once again showed its respect for the person, who left his masterpieces to Georgian art, involving incomparable translations of medieval literature. I would like to note with satisfaction that the evening in memory of Jemal Ajiashvili was held at the Tbilisi State University, where the Hebrew language has been taught since 1944,” Tamar Makharashvili, Hebrew specialist and organizer of the event, said.
During the event Jemal Ajiashvili’s friends, colleagues and acquaintances made their speeches and recollected Jemal Ajiashvili; a documentary about Jemal Ajiashvili as well as audio recordings from the Georgian Public Broadcaster’s Golden Fund were presented too.
Shota Rustaveli State Prize Winner Jemal Ajiashvili translated medieval Hebrew poetry, Shakespeare, Dante, Petrarch, Michelangelo, Mayakovsky, Chikamatsu, etc. into Georgian. For years, he had been teaching at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi University, where he had been reading the Hebrew and Tanakh texts of the Bible.
