Chairperson of Latvian Parliament’s European Affairs Committee at TSU

Chairperson of the European Affairs Committee of the Latvian Parliament (Saeima), Zanda Kalnina-Lukasevica visited the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University on October 8. Deputy Rector of TSU, Academician Levan Aleksidze and the representatives of academic circles attended the event.

The participants discussed the upcoming EU Eastern Partnership Summit planned in Vilnius on November 28-29 as well as the perspectives of initialing the Association Agreement between the European Union and Georgia.

“It is very important to hold similar meetings ahead of the Vilnius Summit, because we are able to inform the society how important this summit is for Latvia. At the same time, we can discuss all the interesting issues with the public,” Zanda Kalnina-Lukasevica said.

TSU Professor Alexander Rondeli showed interest in Latvia’s development peculiarities following its EU integration as well as Georgia’s membership perspectives. “It is very important that Latvia saw how seriously Georgian society looks at the European perspective; how much Georgia is ready for it and how firm this decision is. Latvia is our ally and the member of the Latvian Parliament was reassured today that we are ready for Europe. Therefore, we are looking forward to the Vilnius Summit,” Rondeli said.  

“The meeting was very sincere and interesting. It was reiterated at the today’s meeting that Georgia’s EU membership has no alternative. It is important that the European Union supports Georgia. I think that we will achieve good results,” TSU Professor Ioseb Salukvadze said.

A discussion was held by the end of the meeting. Chairperson of the European Affairs Committee of the Latvian Parliament (Saeima), Zanda Kalnina-Lukasevica answered the questions from TSU Professors and PhD students.
