TSU Hosts Exhibition Dedicated to Zviad Gamsakhurdia’s 80th Anniversary

An exhibition dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Georgia’s first President Zviad Gamsakhurdia was opened at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University on April 10. His photos, archival materials, manuscripts, books, translations, scientific papers were displayed. The majority of these materials are exhibited for the first time. Vice Rector of TSU, Alexander Tsiskaridze, professors, students and invited guests attended the opening event.

“It is a unique exhibition because very interesting materials related to Zviad Gamsakhurdia’s life, work and activities have been displayed. A lot of materials, obtained by our student, have been displayed for the first time and I think that our guests will find out a lot of interesting things about this important political figure, writer and public figure,” Alexander Tsiskaridze said.

“The guests of exhibition will have an opportunity to view important documents and materials related to Zviad Gamsakhurdia’s life and activities. It is especially important to arrange similar events today, because time has come to start talking about the national movement, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, a person, who sacrificed his own life for Georgia’s independence and freedom. These are the ideas, which we, the youth and future generation, need most of all,” Giorgi Arkania, TSU student and an organizer of the exhibition, said.

Among the exhibits are the 1956 Gorgasliani case files; letters (manuscripts) written by Gamsakhurdia in custody in 1977; Gamsakhurdia’s letters addressed to Victor Nozadze; dissident publications released in the seventies, etc. All materials stored at the TSU Library and Museum, MIA Archive and private collections are displayed.

The event has been organized by the TSU Center of Modern History and MIA Archive. The exhibition is being held as part of the Week dedicated to Zviad Gamsakhurdia’s 80th anniversary and it will last till April 12.
