New Academic Year at TSU

An event marking the launch of the 2015-2016 Academic Year was held at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on September 14. As a result of the Unified National Exams in 2015, about 3600 students were enrolled in TSU with 2765 first-semester students (80%) receiving state grants.

TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava, Minister of Education and Science Tamar Sanikidze, Tbilisi Mayor Davit Narmania, representatives of academic circles congratulated students on the beginning of the new academic year.
“Today we are beginning the new 2015-2016 academic year. About 4000 new students have joined our university. I congratulate the first-year students on the beginning of a new stage in their life and wish them success and interesting university life,” TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava said.

“Over the past years I traditionally come to my native university to congratulate students on the beginning of the new academic year. This day is especially important for the first-year students, as they started a new stage in their life. Their future will largely depend on how much they will manage to get qualification, knowledge and education at the university. I am sure that each of them will be successful,” Tbilisi Mayor Davit Narmania said.

Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Tamar Sanikidze said: “The new academic year starts today and I would like to take this opportunity and congratulate our school children, students, teachers, lecturers and administration on the new academic year and wish them to use the opportunity provided by the state. It is the beginning of their successful life and development.” 

TSU Rector Vladimer Papava awarded Rector’s Scholarship to the best performing seventh semester student from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Venera Tsertsvadze. She will receive a monthly scholarship at GEL 250 from the Rector’s salary.

“It is a huge incentive for me to receive the Rector’s scholarship and I am very grateful to Rector Papava. It will encourage me to take further successful steps,” Venera Tsertsvadze said.

The best lecturers for the 2014-2015 academic year selected by students were awarded certificates. Among them were: Maia Mestvirishvili from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences; Keti Chitaladze from the Faculty of Economics and Business; Tamaz Jologua from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences; Yuri Papava and Simon Tsereteli from the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences; Teimuraz Jorbenadze and Rusudan Karseladze from the Faculty of Medicine; Nani Gelovani and Nino Gogiashvili from the Faculty of Humanities; Mariam Khoperia from the Faculty of Law; Roman Kharbedia from the Institute of Tourism Development and Khatuna Gelashvili, an invited lecturer from the Language Center.

The first-year students enrolled with highest scores received memorable gifts. In addition, Davit Soselia, who was enrolled in the bachelor’s degree program of the San Diego State University at TSU with highest scores in General Skills, will receive a monthly scholarship at GEL 200 from the company Gino Paradise.

On September 14 TSU announced about the launch of the seventh season of a literary competition Autumn Legend, a joint project of TSU and the company Geocell. The three winners will traditionally receive pecuniary prizes at GEL 1000, GEL 700 and GEL 500, respectively, from the Tbilisi State University.

This year TSU was still leading as the first choice university. Out of 39 000 prospective students, 10 000 preferred TSU as their first choice. Over 20 000 students are undergoing their studies at seven faculties of TSU. 
   
212 accredited educational programs are implemented at the Tbilisi State University, including 65 bachelor’s degree programs; 3 one-step programs; 90 master’s degree programs; 42 doctoral degree programs; 9 vocational programs; 3 Georgian language teaching programs. TSU also implements foreign-language and joint educational programs with various foreign universities.
