Registration Open for Participation in Winter School “Ancient World and the Caucasus”
A winter school “Ancient World and the Caucasus” will be held at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University on March 6-11. The winter school will be organized by the Institute of Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies of the TSU Faculty of Humanities with the financial support of Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation.
The winter school aims at delivering a cycle of lectures on the ancient heritage of the Caucasus, which thematically is multi-field and multi-profile. The school involves studying the ancient heritage of the Caucasus from the perspective of various disciplines (history, linguistics, archaeology, politics, epigraphy, religion, philosophy) and delivering comprehensive and critical information to the listeners during the seasonal school, which will fully share Georgian, regional as well as European experience of studying the ancient Caucasus. The lectures will be delivered by professors from the University of Jena (Germany): Prof. Dr. Annegret Plontke-Lüning; Prof. Dr. Timo Stickler; University of Bremen (Germany): Prof. Dr. Tassilo Schmitt; Tbilisi State University (Georgia): Prof. L. Gordeziani; Prof. V. Licheli; Prof. G. Lortkipanidze; Prof. R. Gordeziani; Ilia State University (Georgia): Prof. L. Gigineishvili.
The winter school, within the framework of the cycle of lectures on the ancient heritage of the Caucasus, aims at providing comprehensive information about the history, culture, epigraphic and archaeological monuments and linguistic data. The seasonal school program involves 10 thematically different issues related to the ancient Caucasus:
- Key Stages and Aspects of Greco-Roman and Georgian Relations (T. Schmitt, University of Bremen).
- Ancient Caucasus – Historic Panorama (T. Stickler, University of Jena).
- The Caucasus in Ancient Sources (T. Stickler, University of Jena).
- The Caucasus in Ancient Eastern Sources (L. Gordeziani, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University).
- At the Beginning of Georgian Civilization (V. Licheli, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University).
- Pre-Greek-Etruscan-Caucasian language relations (R. Gordeziani, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University).
- Ancient Philosophy and Its Receptions in Georgian Thinking of the Middle Ages (L. Gigineishvili, Ilia State University).
- Greek Epigraphy in Georgia (T. Schmitt, University of Bremen).
- Late Ancient and Early Christian Art and Architecture in Georgia (A. Plontke-Lüning, University of Jena).
- Latest Archaeological Discoveries of Ancient Caucasus (G. Lortkipanidze, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University).
Students from the Faculty of Humanities of Georgian universities, who have attended at least four semesters of BA program, as well as MA and PhD students are eligible to participate. A part of lectures will be delivered in English; therefore, students will be required to have an approved English qualification at level B1.
After undergoing an electronic registration, the organizing group will select 20 students for the winter school.
