Professor Gerry Simpson visiting Tbilisi State University

Professor Gerry Simpson holds the Kenneth Bailey Chair of International Law in the Melbourne Law School. He is a visiting professor of international law at the London School of Economics, where he held a chair until 2009.

International Law Institute of Tbilisi State University has a long-standing cooperation with him, involving the visits, guest lecturing and advise on development of academic programme in Public International Law, as taught at both – undergraduate and graduate levels.
 
During the week of June 16, Professor Simpson will, in the framework of his yet another visit to Tbilisi State University on the invitation of International Law Institute, deliver a series of lectures on various topics of Public International Law, including:
 
1. International Law
2. International Law and the use of force
3. International Law and the Cold War
4. International Criminal Law
 
On 17 July each year International Law Institute of Tbilisi State University hosts events to celebrate the World Day for International Justice, also referred to as Day of International Criminal Justice, as the day is celebrated throughout the world recognizing the emerging system of international criminal justice. July 17 is also an anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute, the multilateral treaty, based on which International Criminal Court was established.
 
To promote international criminal justice by academically considering issues pertaining to international criminal justice and protection of humans from atrocities Tbilisi State University will celebrate July 17 this year as well.
 
For 2014 celebration of 17 July the following topics have been selected:
 
- Amnesties and international criminal law,
- Responsibility of international organizations/peacekeepers for international crimes,
- Transitional justice.
 
In the week of 16 June the works in progress workshop will be organized by Tbilisi State University International Law Institute for the works to be finalized for July 17. The keynote speaker for the work in progress workshop is Professor Simpson.
 
The selected works will be included in the programme of the conference celebrating the Day of International Criminal Justice on 17 July, 2014.

Pre-condition for participation is fluency in English.

For works in progress workshop please email your suggested title within the broad scope of the topics for Work in Progress as listed above.
 
Work(s) in progress must be in English, directed to one of the three selected topics listed above and can include:
1) materials related to your research agenda, such as a research project proposal outlining your research questions, methodology, etc.; materials on a research project already underway; a draft of a scholarly article or a book chapter in progress; a draft of a paper presentation at an academic conference; a PhD thesis proposal; drafts of PhD thesis chapters; etc., and/or
2) Any other substantive academic materials you are currently working on. Please note that such materials should contribute significantly to advancing your academic development agenda.
Works in progress do not need to be finalized by the works in progress workshop to be held in Tbilisi State University in the week of 16 June. The exact date will be communicated to the pre-selected candidates.
