“Contemporary Georgian Statehood as Viewed by Georgia and the World”
At 2pm on November 9-10-11, 2015 the TSU scientific center Religious Principles and Relations of the World Cultures (the center was established upon the instruction of the first President of Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, by decree of the permanent social-humanitarian commission of the Supreme Council of Georgia and is functioning at TSU under the order of the Rector’s Office, with the blessing given by Georgian Patriarch Ilia II, and direct recommendation and mediation of President Mikheil Saakashvili) will organize an international conference “Contemporary Georgian Statehood as Viewed by Georgia and the World;” a photo exhibition depicting the lives of Georgia’s national hero, Merab Kostava and the first President of Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdia; exhibition of cultural and educational printed materials – books, brochures, newspapers, magazines, etc. – will be held as well.
Other organizers of the event are: the commission of culture, education, de-occupation and international relations of the Autonomic Republic of Abkhazia, the commission of interethnic relations of the Supreme Council of Georgia; international organizations - Zviad Gamsakhurdia Society in the Netherlands; Georgian National Section of the International Society for Human Rights (IGFM-ISHR); NGO Merab Kostava International Foundation for Culture, Education and Tourism Development, NGO Center for Digitalization and Analysis. The conference has been prepared on the basis of the TSU scientific center Religious Principles and Relations of the World Cultures and represents a part of a large-scale, international cultural-educational project “Georgia as Viewed by the World and the World as Viewed by Georgia.” It is dedicated to Independence Day of Georgia, Merab Kostava’s birthday, 25th anniversary of the universal, independent, democratic elections in Georgia, and International Day of the Museums.
The motto of the event is the famous words by Georgia’s first President Zviad Gamsakhurdia: “We will defeat our enemies so that they will win with us.”
The event is based on the standpoint of Georgian Patriarch Ilia II expressed in the Easter Epistle concerning the reevaluation of some chapters of Georgian history and subsequently the possibility of some of them to be written anew.
The aim of the conference - For the first time in the history of the modern Georgian statehood the conference “Contemporary Georgian Statehood as Viewed by Georgia and the World” offers the Georgian and foreign society the analysis of the 1990-91 national policy through the prism of consideration of modern advances and a wide spectrum of the problems of the contemporary state, holding an inter-ethnic , interdisciplinary, intercultural dialogue between the Georgian and world societies, outlining the prospects of relations and cooperation with the world states and societies. This analysis has made it possible to highlight the huge role performed by national hero, Merab Kostava and Georgia’s first president, Zviad Gamsakhurdia in the process of restoration of independence, national-orthodox-religious outlook in Georgia and formation of the Georgian state, to bring to light still tabooed or incorrectly interpreted documents containing the problems which are to be solved and faced by Georgia and the world countries, clarification of which are of great importance for both Georgia and the rest of the world.
Analyzing the above mentioned issues is not the only goal of the conference. A lot of innovations, dialogue between cultures and religions have been implemented and planned on the basis of ideological-structural transformations; green light has been given to the possibility of creation of new directions of governance, theoretical disciplines. All these and the above mentioned achievements made by modern Georgian state will be discussed at the conference. Only such dimension of a modern state is relevant for the assessment of contemporary Georgian state by Georgian and world societies, its peaceful coexistence and cooperation in the today’s progressive world, holding a dialogue between the cultures and religions of the world countries, integration of the Georgian state, culture and science into the space of the world cultures.
The conference will also focus on the activities of the Merab Kostava International Foundation of Culture, Education and Tourism Development, which was founded to mark the 75th anniversary of Georgia’s national hero, Merab Kostava and the aim of which is to create cultural policies in Georgia as well as to implement a universal culture program. In addition, a photo exhibition depicting the lives and activities of Merab Kostava and Zviad Gamsakhurdia and an exhibition of cultural and educational printed materials, including books, brochures, newspapers and journals, will also be held on the sideline of the conference.
