Conference “Women’s Political Participation and Politics of Women’s Rights”

The Institute for Gender Studies at TSU and the Center for Social Sciences will hold the joint 8th annual scientific conference in gender studies: Women’s Political Participation and Politics of Women’s Rights.

The conference will be held in frames of a 16-day international conference against gender-based violence marked annually from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day). The conference will enable interested researchers to present their own works on the issues of women’s political participation and activism, as well as politics of women’s rights in Georgia and abroad, in various epochs and contexts.

Women’s political participation was the main demand of the first wave of feminism that took place in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It focused on legal issues, primarily on gaining womens rights to actively participate in political and public life. This struggle ended with receiving political rights, but in most societies it did not result in such distribution of power between genders, that should have become the basis for more equal and democratic society; thus, politics of women’s rights is still ruled by political and economic systems pursuing patriarchal interests, which further intensify/maintain unequal distribution of power on gender grounds.

Conference date: December 7, 20166
Conference venue: TSU, Building I
Conference language: Georgian and English (simultaneous translation)
