Ukraine and Georgia: Centenary of Diplomatic Relations

On March 27, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) opened an international conference dedicated to common challenges facing Ukraine and Georgia and the ways to overcome them, as well as the centenary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The international conference “Ukraine and Georgia: Centenary of Diplomatic Relations” has been organized by the TSU Faculty of Social and Political Sciences.

Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze; Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Alexander Tevzadze; Ukrainian Ambassador to Georgia, Ihor Dolhov, Georgian and Ukrainian professors, lecturers and students attended the opening of the conference.

Rector Giorgi Sharvashidze said that Georgia and Ukraine were facing common challenges. “We have relations in a broad range of spheres: literature, scientific contacts, public diplomacy, etc. We have similar geopolitical situation; we are among those countries, who recently faced serious problems. So, the conference will be very interesting,” he noted.

Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Alexander Tevzadze said that several mechanisms have been created to boost cooperation with Ukraine. “The Science and Technology Center in Ukraine cooperates with Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation. Georgian and Ukrainian scientists have an opportunity to implement joint projects within Horizon 2020,” the Deputy Education Minister said.

Ukrainian Ambassador to Georgia, Ihor Dolhov expressed hope that the conference would further deepen historical ties between Georgia and Ukraine. “Our nations had always strived to establish democratic and independent states and we managed to do it. I am proud to hold this conference jointly with TSU. I hope that the event will promote strengthening contacts between Georgian and Ukrainian scientists,” the Ambassador said.

The conference “Ukraine and Georgia: Centenary of Diplomatic Relations” will last for two days. Conference sessions will cover a number of topics, among them cultural diplomacy, historical sources of studying Georgian-Ukrainian relations, common challenges facing Georgia and Ukraine on the international arena and the ways to overcome them, etc.  

The conference has been organized by the Tbilisi State University in partnership with the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, the Ukrainian Embassy to Georgia, the NASU Institute of History of Ukraine, the Scientific Society of History of Diplomacy and International Relations, and the Directorate-General for Rendering Services to Diplomatic Missions.
