Literary Marathon – The Man in the Panther’s Skin by Shota Rustaveli in 50 Languages

The Institute of Empirical Linguistics at Goethe University Frankfurt hosted a literary marathon “The Man in the Panther’s Skin by Shota Rustaveli in 50 Languages” dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the First Democratic Republic of Georgia and the Tbilisi State University.

The literary marathon was held in frames of a cultural program of Georgia as an honorary country of Frankfurt Book Fair. Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze attended the event. Students and academic staff of Goethe University Frankfurt and Tbilisi State University read out extracts from The Man in the Panther’s Skin. Manuscripts with miniatures and illustrations from various publications were presented. Professor Manana Tandashvili of Goethe University Frankfurt is the author of the project.

Rustaveli’s poem created in the 12th century has been stored in a form of over 160 manuscripts and has been translated in over 50 languages. In 2013, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The project is financed by Georgian National Book Center, Goethe University Frankfurt, Tbilisi State University, Department of Culture in the City of Frankfurt and Department of Intercultural Relations at the Municipality of Frankfurt. The project is supported by GeoPlant and Georgian Wine companies.
