EU Ambassador to Georgia Meets TSU Students

Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, Carl Hartzell visited Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on December 18 to discuss EU foreign and security policy issues with students. Ambassador Hartzell met with MA and PhD students from the TSU program in European Studies, as well as students from the TSU International Law Institute.

Rector George Sharvashidze said after the meeting that “it is important for the students to receive interesting information from the original source. Our students asked the Ambassador a lot of questions. Generally, this practice is very good – we regularly invite ambassadors for holding discussions with students,” he said.

Ambassador Hartzell hailed his meeting with students as very interesting, noting that he shared with students his 20-year experience of working in EU’s foreign policy sphere.

Carl Hartzell was appointed Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia in September 2018. As the EUs top diplomat in the country, Ambassador Hartzell oversees the bilateral relationship between the European Union and Georgia, and the work of the Delegation including political and economic affairs as well as cooperation. He represents the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission and works under the direct authority of the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in implementing the EU’s foreign policy. Prior to this new appointment, he served as Senior Foreign Policy Adviser to the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk in 2014-2018; earlier in 2013-2014, he was Senior Adviser to the Deputy Secretary General of the EU External Action Service; in 2012-2013 he was a Member of Cabinet of High Representative / Vice President Catherine Ashton.

The event was organized by the TSU Institute for European Studies in partnership with the TSU International Law Institute (Faculty of Law). TSU regularly hosts similar meetings with the EU officials since 2010.
