Scientific Conference – Focusing on Esthetics

Esthetic Dentistry and its integration into complex orthopedics, frontal peri-implant soft tissues, orthopedic management – these issues were discussed at an international scientific conference Focusing on Esthetics held at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on December 24.

Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze said: “Tbilisi State University has a great experience in the fields of orthodontics and dentistry. The first Department covering these fields was opened in 1922 that laid the foundation to Georgian dentistry. A lot of good dentists are connected to our university. Today, we heard the report by TSU alumna, Mariam Margvelashvili, who was the first to gain recognition in the United States. It is a very good tradition, when TSU alumni return to their alma mater and share experience with their colleagues not only from TSU, but from the entire country as well.”

Dr. Kenneth Malament, President of the American Academy of Prosthodontics, Mariam Margvelashvili, Doctor of Medicine, other Georgian and foreign experts, researchers, scientists and students participated in the conference.

Dr. Kenneth Malament, President of the American Academy of Prosthodontics said that prosthodontics programs are highly developed in the United States and Europe, especially in Germany and Switzerland and they meet “high international standards.” He also noted that each country has a different standard and the participants of the conference are just familiarizing themselves with these standards at the conference. “It is very important for both lecturers and students,” he noted.

“TSU is a pioneer in dental education. We have invited very famous speakers from the United States. Their reports are focused on esthetic problems that is characteristic to dental treatment. I hope that the information provided by them to Georgian dentists and students, and not only, will be used in practice. It will help increase the quality of dental aid from both dental and functional points of view,” Mamuka Margvelashvili, Doctor of Medicine, Head of the TSU Dentistry Department, said.

The international conference was organized by the Faculty of Medicine as part of events marking TSU’s 100th anniversary.
