TSU Has Official Symbols

The Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) has official symbols. The State Council of Heraldry at the Parliament of Georgia developed the designs of the flag and coat of arms of TSU based on the criteria provided by the TSU Representative Council.

Considering high public interest, the designs developed by the State Council of Heraldry were published in a newspaper Tbilisi University as well as posted on TSU website and its official Facebook page during several months.

The university symbols were unanimously approved by the members of the TSU Representative Council on December 29.

Director of the TSU Library, Professor Zurab Gaiparashvili said that the university symbols have not been changed, but they have been specified.

A seal developed by Dimitri Shevardnadze through the consultations with Ivane Javakhishvili served as the basis for creating the university coat of arms. Its sketch was approved by the 4th meeting of the Council of Professors of the Tbilisi State University on February 5, 1918. The coat of arms was placed on the university publications; since 1922 the university alumni had been wearing special badges with coat of arms.

The Georgian-Latin inscription on the university’s initial seal - „ტფილისის უნივერსიტეტი – Universitas Tphilisensis“ - has remained unchanged; however, the date “1918” has been added to it.
