TSU Marks Prof. Giorgi Khutsishvili’s 70th Birth Anniversary

On November 20, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) marked the 70th birth anniversary of Professor Giorgi Khutsishvili. Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze, professors, students and invited guests attended the event.

Rector Sharvashidze spoke about his cooperation with Giorgi Khutsishvili in the sphere of education as well as about introduction of a new discipline in conflict studies at TSU. “Today, conflict studies are an established field in Georgia and it is largely due to Giorgi Khutsishvili. He had a lot of interesting research papers on how to resolve conflicts, traumas, other issues,” he said.

Speakers talked about Giorgi Khutsishvili’s activities and his contribution to peaceful resolution of conflicts and peacebuilding in Georgia and the Caucasus region. “Giorgi Khutsishvili was the first to show interest in conflict studies. Simultaneously, he was a top level researcher, mediator; he could carry out very serious negotiations. Let me recollect the year 2008, following the Russian-Georgian war, when he managed to arrange a meeting between Georgian and Russian researchers in Istanbul, where he demonstrated great skills as a mediator,” TSU Professor, MP Guguli Magradze said.

“Giorgi Khutsishvili and I founded the Caucasus Regional Research Association, where he worked actively, trying to make a contribution to peaceful resolution of conflicts. Simultaneously, he tried to engage TSU professors and students in these processes. Giorgi Khutsishvili had a lot of publications of both theoretical and practical nature,” TSU Professor Alexander Kukhianidze said.

A presentation of Prof. Giorgi Khutsishvili’s works was also be held during the event.
