TSU among 400 Best Universities in Europe
Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) is ranked at No. 301+ in the list of the best universities in Europe. TSU is the only university in the region that is among 400 best universities in Europe, according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings data on top colleges in Europe. Only 35 European countries are represented in the Europe 2017 ranking.
European universities take just over 40 per cent of the places in an almost 1,000-strong list of the best universities in the world. The University of Oxford takes the top spot in Europe ranking, while 90 other UK universities appear in the league table. Germany is the next most-represented European country, with 41 institutions, many of them within the top 100.

Moreover, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University is the first university from Georgia represented in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings last year.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings is one of the most prestigious rankings with 12-year experience. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-2017 ranks 980 universities around the world; TSU is ranked at No. 801+ and it is the only higher educational institution not only from Georgia, but from the entire Caucasus region too.
TSU received highest assessment in industry income and international outlook components – international outlook involves international-to-domestic-student ratio; international-to-domestic-staff ratio, as well as international collaboration; industry income component seeks to help industry with innovations, inventions and consultancy.
It should be noted that to measure productivity, Times Higher Education counts the number of papers published in the academic journals indexed by Elsevier’s Scopus database per scholar.
The performance indicators are grouped into five areas:
• Teaching (the learning environment): 30%
• Research (volume, income and reputation): 30%
• Citations (research influence): 30%
• International outlook (staff, students and research): 7.5%
• Industry income (knowledge transfer): 2.5%
To assess the best universities in the world, great importance is attached to the university’s international outlook, staff-student ratio, research productivity, number of papers published in peer-reviewed journals, citation index, etc.
