New Academic Year at TSU

An event marking the launch of the 2018-2019 Academic Year was held at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on September 17. As a result of the Unified National Exams in 2018, 4432 students were enrolled in bachelor’s degree program with over 50% receiving state grants.

Vice Rector of TSU, Alexander Tsiskaridze as well as professors and lecturers congratulated the first-year students on the beginning of the new academic year.

Vice Rector Tsiskaridze said that the majority of students have chosen the Tbilisi State University. “We welcome the new cohort of students, who simultaneously represent the 100th anniversary cohort. This year we all mark the 100th anniversary of TSU. Therefore, this cohort is especially important. It will continue those traditions, which are implemented annually after introducing and creating higher education in Georgia and particularly at TSU,” Tsiskaridze said.

Demur Merkviladze, TSU student with highest scores, said that Tbilisi State University is the oldest Georgian university and just that is why he decided to enroll at TSU. “I am glad to have received the highest scores. I did not expect such results, but if you work hard and spare no efforts, nothing is unachievable. I wanted to study geology and decided that TSU was the best place for studying it deeply,” he said.

The TSU Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences has the majority of students with highest scores. Entrants of San Diego State University with the highest scores also decided to choose TSU educational programs.

Over 200 accredited academic programs are implemented at seven faculties of TSU with over 20 000 students undergoing their studies there. The Tbilisi State University is the first national university in the Caucasus founded by Georgian intellectuals with European education and values. It is a flagship not only by its century-old history, but also by its experience and opportunities. TSU belongs to the top 2% of the world’s best universities, according to U.S. News & World Report – Best Global Universities Ranking.
