Solemn Meeting to Commemorate Givi Machavariani’s 90th Birth Anniversary

On December 6, the Faculty of Humanities of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) held a solemn meeting marking the 90th birth anniversary of Georgian linguist, Givi Machavariani. Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze; Dean of the TSU Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Nana Gaprindashvili; scientists, academics, students and invited guests attended the event.

Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze said that Givi Machavariani created an epoch in terms of comparative analysis of Kartvelian languages. “He was distinguished by his intensive scientific activities, unique skills. His two monographs –The System of Sonants and Ablaut in Kartvelian Languages co-authored by Tamaz Gamkrelidze and Proto-Kartvelian Consonant System – are the fundamental monographs laying the foundation for new vision, new understanding of Kartvelian languages. The research and development of Kartvelian languages would have been absolutely different if the process had been led by such talented researchers. Unfortunately, it did not happen so. However, a lot of things that have been done by Professor Machavariani are still fundamental,” Giorgi Sharvashidze said.

“Today the Tbilisi State University honors the memory of Professor Givi Machavariani, who died very young, 40 years old. Givi Machavariani was a distinguished scientist, researcher of the history and structure of Kartvelian languages, who created new knowledge. His contribution to our scientific space is invaluable,” Dean of the TSU Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Nana Gaprindashvili said.

The issues of structure and history of Caucasian and Kartvelian languages, as well as general linguistic problems took a central part in Machavariani’s research activities. Due to his fundamental monographs - The System of Sonants and Ablaut in Kartvelian Languages (co-authored by Tamaz Gamkrelidze) and Proto-Kartvelian Consonant System – Machavariani gained the name of a famous researcher of Kartvelian languages. He regularly participated in all-union conferences and international congresses. Since 1954 he carried out pedagogical activities at the Tbilisi State University – he was Assistant Professors at the TSU Department of Caucasian Languages as well as the Department of Old Georgian Language; later Professor at the Department of General Linguistics and research fellow at the Institute of Linguistics of the Georgian Academy of Sciences.
