Honorary Doctorate Conferment Ceremony at TSU
On September 24, Honorary Doctorates (Doctor Honoris Causa) of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University were conferred to H.S.H. Prince Dr. Professor Heinrich von und zu Liechtenstein, Prof. Dr. Mark Haynes Daniell, Prof. Dr. Nicholas P. Toth and Prof. Dr. Kathy Diane Schick.
Speaking at the event, Rector of TSU George Sharvashidze welcomed the fact of conferring Honorary Doctorates to “our longtime partners and colleagues from Indiana University, Professors Nicholas P. Toth and Kathy Diane Schick.” He also noted that “we have a long cooperation with them and greater plans for the future – connecting Tanzania to Georgia and China and conducting joint scientific research” in all the three places. Sharvashidze noted that the National Museum of Georgia has been involved in this initiative and expressed hope that this relationship will further continue. The TSU Rector said that Honorary Doctorate has also been conferred to H.S.H. Prince Dr. Professor Heinrich von und zu Liechtenstein, who works on the issues of public policy and public economics. “He is a very interesting scientist, author of many books and publications. Prof. Dr. Mark Haynes Daniell works on economic and generally state arrangement issues,” Rector George Sharvashidze said.
Honorary Doctorates were conferred to the Professors pursuant to the decree of the TSU Academic Council, including to Prince Dr. Professor Heinrich von und zu Liechtenstein for his contribution to the development of the field of financial management. “It’s a very big honor to get the diploma of honorary doctorate from the university. It was an amazing experience to be in Georgia for the first time, because of the people and after all the generosity, hospitality I have never seen something similar in any other country. So, it was really interesting,” Prince Heinrich von und zu Liechtenstein said.
Honorary Doctorate was conferred to Prof. Dr. Mark Haynes Daniell for his special contribution to the development of investment climate in Georgia and popularization of Georgia abroad. “We are all delighted to attend this extraordinary ceremony at this magnificent university, which is very well known as a great institution. And to visit Georgia is always a great pleasure,” he said.
“It has been a great honor to come to Georgia and participate in the ceremony, where my wife and I were awarded honorary doctorates. Georgia is our favorite country in the world. We love the people, we love the culture, the architecture, the food and the wine. Working with the Dmanisi archaeological research team has been wonderful as well as very enlightening. We have been able to bring Georgians to our research scene and go to other countries to study how other people in Tanzania and in China are also doing archaeology of this time period,” says Nicholas

“I was tremendously impressed by the campus of the Tbilisi State University. It’s just a personal great honor to be here and to have this wonderful honorary doctoral degree. I cannot express my thanks enough. The Georgians that we know, their thirsty love of knowledge, their wonderful love of life, all of it is such a wonderful package, we could not have wanted a better place to have been honored this way,” says Kathy Diane Schick, Professor of Anthropology and Biology of Indiana University, co-founder and co-director of Stone Age Institute and Center for Archaeological and Technological Studies.
Prof. Dr. Mark Haynes Daniell and H.S.H. Prince Dr. Professor Heinrich von und zu Liechtenstein delivered a joint public lecture on the topics: “From Risk to Responsibility: Responding Thoughtfully to a Challenging World”, “Family Purpose: 2 A Conceptual Analysis of Individual and Shared Purposes in Business Families.” Professors Nicholas P. Toth and Kathy Diane Schick delivered a lecture “Human Evolution and the Dawn of Human Technology.”
During the same event, a title of an Honorary Professor of Tbilisi State Academy of Arts was conferred to Professor Robert Batt.
