Statement by TSU Academic and Representative Councils

The Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) has already drawn public attention to various problematic issues. Some issues have already been solved as a result of intensive cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia and the Tbilisi City Hall. We hope that with the support of the Tbilisi municipality and personally Mayor Davit Narmania, a new cemetery will not be established near the Maglivi Building of TSU and the problem related to the construction of fuel station will be settled.

Rector of the Tbilisi State University, Academician Vladimer Papava has expressed public protest over the construction of fuel station near the Maglivi Building of TSU. Upon the request of students and professors, he applied to the Tbilisi Mayor. Rector Papava noted that opening of a fuel station is equally unacceptable and dangerous. Since this territory is not owned by the university, the Tbilisi municipality and the government should handle this issue and prevent the construction and opening of the facility near TSU, which is inappropriate for the university. Moreover, an ethical side of the problem should also be taken into consideration – there is not even a single educational institution worldwide with similar facilities located nearby. Commenting on this statement, the government members and representatives of the Tbilisi municipality said that all norms were observed during construction of the above mentioned fuel station.

Information was provided to the Tbilisi Mayor on how this territory can be used purposefully; in particular, a youth center can be opened, or the University City can be constructed there. A project was also attached to the letter sent to the Tbilisi Mayor, according to which several educational buildings, sport complex, student city, culture center and other facilities can be constructed on the territory near the Maglivi Building.

TSU students have expressed strong protest against the construction of fuel station near the Maglivi Building.

We hope that the Government of Georgia and the Tbilisi City Hall will show goodwill, make duly decisions in favor of young generation and scientific society and prevent opening of such facilities near the Maglivi Building, which are inappropriate for the university and pose a threat to students and professors.
