“Brief History of Tbilisi University” – Presentation of Updated Version

A presentation of an updated version of the book “Brief History of Tbilisi University” released in 1988 was held at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University on February 12. The book by Sergo Jorbenadze was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of TSU and it covers the historical period from 1907, university foundation, first public lecture, establishment of various faculties to all those activities that the century-old university can only boast about.    

“It is a brilliant work covering the University’s history from the day of its foundation to 1988. It is good that the readers will again have an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the history of foundation of the University. All the facts highlighted in the book are extremely interesting and it is felt that the book has been written with great love,” Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze said. 

TSU Professor Sergi Jorbenadze said that an updated version of another book by Sergo Jorbenadze “Ivane Javakhishvili’s Life and Contribution” (1983) will be released in 2021 and it will be dedicated to the 145th anniversary of Ivane Javakhishvili. 

“For me, this fact is special because of two factors – first, TSU is Alma Mater that enjoys great love and respect. Moreover, it has played a huge role in the development of a lot of Georgian professionals. The book was released by my grandfather and he is the author of the book. One important detail that will interest readers is a prehistory, existing before the university’s foundation. The book describes the resistance that the university had met in the process of foundation from particular persons and the state,” TSU Professor Sergi Jorbenadze said. 

The updated version of “Brief History of Tbilisi University” was dedicated to TSU’s anniversary and its editors are Sergi Jorbenadze and Dimitri Gegenava.
