TSU to Mark 100th Anniversary in 2018 under the Aegis of UNESCO

The 100th anniversary of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) will be marked in 2018 under the aegis of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) – the relevant decision was made at the 39th session of the UNESCO General Conference in Paris upon proposal by member states.

UNESCO participates since 1956 in the commemorations of historic events and in the anniversaries of eminent personalities celebrated by member states in order to give them worldwide significance.

A special government commission has been set up to plan and organize the events marking the 100th anniversary of TSU countrywide and internationally. The commission is led by Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili and it consists of members of the government, the Parliament, the Georgian Orthodox Church and the National Academy of Sciences. The events marking TSU’s anniversary will begin in December 2017 (the TSU statute was approved in December 1917) and last throughout the next year.

The first-ever national university in the Caucasus was opened on January 26, 1918, the day of commemoration of King David the Builder (new style February 8). The university laid the foundation for a European-type higher school in Georgia, based on Georgian educational traditions.

Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University meets its 100th anniversary as the major educational and research institution in the country, which annually implements about 200 local and international scientific grant projects with about 22 thousand Georgian and about 600 foreign students undergoing their studies there.

Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) is the only university not only in Georgia, but throughout the Caucasus region, which has been ranked among the top 2 percent of universities in the world, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Along with BA, MA and PhD programs, TSU also implements higher vocational education program, as well as short-term and long-term certification programs. Due to close collaboration with various foreign universities, TSU students have an opportunity to participate in exchange and joint international educational programs as well as to get dual academic degrees.
