The Memorandums of Understating and Letters of Intent were signed as part of events marking the 100th anniversary of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU).
Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze, Minister of Education and Science, Mikheil Chkhenkeli and Director of Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation, Manana Mikaberidze signed Letters of Intent with the representatives of four European universities on establishing and financing the Centers for Kartvelian Studies.
The agreements envisage further intensification of relations with the leading universities of Hungary, Lithuania, Estonia and Germany. Rector Giorgi Sharvashidze said that later similar agreements would be signed with Turkey’s Düzce University and Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena. “Under the agreement, our young doctors, students and graduates will have an opportunity to conduct independent research at these universities, to deliver lectures in Kartvelian Studies in order to popularize our country, our nation, our culture,” Sharvashidze said.

This Memorandum provides opportunities for learning Georgian language, Georgian literature, Georgian history and culture; our professors will be actively involved in this process. The centers will help foreign students acquire comprehensive knowledge about Georgian history and culture.”
“The joint initiative of the Tbilisi State University, the National Science Foundation and the Ministry of Education and Science aims at popularizing Georgian language, Georgian cultural heritage among the academic community of European universities. We think that it actually is an issue of state importance and one of the steps ahead towards the development of Georgian studies,” Director of National Science Foundation, Manana Mikaberidze said.
Under the Memorandum signed between TSU and European partner universities, the parties undertake to develop bilateral relations, to create joint educational programs and participate in exchange programs.
Prof. Dr. Holger Mühlenkamp, rector of the German University of Administrative Sciences Speyer, hailed the Tbilisi State University as one of the major partners, saying that “this day will further strengthen the cooperation, which should last for years.”
