New Literary Publications in Frankfurt

Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) presented new publications at Frankfurt Book Fair. Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze and Georgian Ambassador to Germany, Elguja Khokrishvili attended the events organized by TSU at Frankfurt Book Fair.

“Essays on Georgian Literature” was presented by Irma Ratiani, the author and the director of TSU Institute of Literature. The publication reviews important works of Georgian literature.

Nino Popiashvili, doctor of philology, presented her two books at Frankfurt Book Fair: “Suliko in Languages Spoken in the World” and a monograph “Georgian Enlightenment – Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani.” The author noted that the monograph is about European horizons of Georgian enlightenment and it discusses the enlightenment tendencies of the 17th century writers and public figures, among them Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani, Vakhtang VI, Davit Guramishvili and other authors. The book Suliko involves over 100 translations in more than 20 languages. It should be noted that a part of translations are released for the first time. The book triggered huge interest just upon its publication. The translations included in Nino Popiashvili’s book were recently printed in Specimen Press.

Visitors of Frankfurt Book Fair showed great interest towards German translation of Giacomo Ponti by Davit Magradze, published by Shaker Verlag, a German publishing house, in 2018. The introduction to the poem in German translation was prepared by German poet and writer, Gert Robert Grünert, who read out some extracts from the poem together with Nino Popiashvili.

According to local literary critics, Dato Magradze’s Giacomo Ponti is the best example of modern Georgian poetry. The poem was translated in German by Nino Popiashvili, Gert Robert Grünert and Maia Lisovski.

In 2015, Gert Robert Grünert and Nino Popiashvili released the anthology of Georgian poetry, containing the verses of over 80 poets, including Davit Magradze.
