New Prospects for Collaboration with Goethe University of Frankfurt

Deepening of scientific collaboration and implementation of exchange programs were the key issues of the Memorandum of Cooperation signed by Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, George Sharvashidze and President of the Goethe University of Frankfurt, Birgitta Wolff on October 13. Consul General of Georgia to Germany, Ioseb Chkhikvishvili also attended the signing ceremony. The Memorandum of Cooperation was signed on the sidelines of Frankfurt Book Fair that is yet another confirmation of successful scientific collaboration between Georgia and Germany.

The Tbilisi State University and the University of Frankfurt have been successfully collaborating for years. Under the new agreement, the two universities will intensify collaboration in the directions of ethnology-ethnography and digital humanities. 

Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze said that the University of Frankfurt is TSU’s long-time partner and formalizing the collaboration will be a good precondition for encouraging joint research. “The Memorandum was signed on the sidelines of Frankfurt Book Fair. Many scientists, who are cooperating with the University of Frankfurt, present joint research papers at Frankfurt Book Fair. It is a good opportunity to remind Europe and we also are Europeans and that science is developed well in Georgia,” Rector Sharvashidze said.

Along with the Memorandum, the two universities signed a number of agreements envisaging participation of students, including PhD students in exchange programs and their active involvement in research. “This is a framework agreement, which enables us to further deepen collaboration; in addition, students and professors will have an opportunity to participate in joint scientific activities,” President of the Goethe University of Frankfurt, Birgitta Wolff said.

The Tbilisi State University presented a broad program at Frankfurt Book Fair. Public lectures and presentations are being held in frames of the fair to discuss Georgian-German scientific relations and future prospects for collaboration.
